Helnesværingen (=the archetype of the residents of Helnessund) is born with seawater in hes veins. Every spring, ie after the worst winter storms have given up, the helnesværing take on hes sea-boots and launch hes boat. For the ones who are fortunate enough to have boat in the marina, there is boating all year round. When the wind is blowing at its worst during the winter the helnesværing goes down the harbor to check the mooring and talk "sjit" with neighbors who are out on the same errand. Some wives are of the opinion that the boat comes first, and that is not far from the truth. Helnesværingen is just born like that!

Helnessund marina / Helnessund Boating Association is close to the "center" of Helnessund.

Moon phase plays an important role. The fishing is believed be best 3-8 days after full moon (3/4-1/2 s), and 3-8 days after new moon (about 1/4-1/2 new).

The older helnesværing do not use charts. He sails after "med", feel it in the bones when approaching a reef.

The helnesværing is also careful to check the weather before going to sea. In Helnessund the weather is personified. "He's good cold now" and "Han became good weather" is the way he talk about the weather.

The helnesværing have binoculars on the windowsill. He sits in hes chair watching the boats sail by. Now he has also got a laptop to see which  boats who are out of sight.

The helnesværing know when it is ebb and flow. It is almost as important as having good "Hall" when going out fishing.

Regarding "hall", ask the helnesværing.

Boating in Helnessund started approx. 8000 years ago when the first inhabitants came paddling north along innlad ice and the boat has been used ever since.
